Have you renewed your vows lately? Not married, that’s ok you can still renew them. Your vows are your commitments. You agree to participate in some fashion to an idea, cause, activity or person. When you create a friendship, an agreement forms (a vow) to interact with each other in a specific way. Your career also requires a vow – I agree to do and act in a certain way in exchange for monetary and other fulfillments.
I like the way Stephen R. Covey’s book “First Things First” discusses vows in his own way. He talks about creating your life vision, developing your personal values, validating the roles that you play in life, and creating your life path based on a system of goal creation.
Meditation can be used in a similar fashion. We focus our attention inwards, discovering and validating our authentic self. We learn to release judgements and influences that have controlled our past behavior. Our core values are strengthened as we learn to trust and nurture a self reflective lifestyle. The vows we take are statements and agreements in alignment with our true self.
As we explore life, external events can impact how we view and experience our vows; however, as meditators, we can set the energy, the tone, our view. Renewing your vows is clearing out the past and validating the present. Our reality is in this moment, not the next. Renewing your vows is the simple act of grounding, releasing, and calling your attention to the present. See your agreements and decide if they compliment and validate you. Renew your personal vow to yourself and enjoy the experience of living.
